Overview:
Twenty-year-old Xavier Dolan makes an audacious start as writer, director and actor in this lively and disarmingly frank study of teenage petulance. When not seeking solace with teacher Suzanne Clement and classmate Francois Arnaud, Dolan's temperamental 16 year-old Quebecois is feuding bitterly with once adored mother Anne Dorval. However, when she discovers he is gay, she decides to send him to a boarding school to learn some morals and manners. Although the rants become repetitive and the allusions to Arthur Rimbaud and Antonin Artaud are wince-inducingly gauche, Dolan concocts several moments of excruciatingly bleak comedy. Similarly, while his dialogue veers between the scabrously realistic and the pseudo-poetic and he flits between visual styles with a precocity that irritates as much as it impresses, he can be forgiven such flamboyance, especially as the performances, the fantasy interludes and the monochrome confessional inserts are all so nicely judged.
