Overview:
Infamous British stand-up Russell Brand reprises his role from hit comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall here, only this time he's hogging the limelight as impish rock star Aldous Snow. Jonah Hill (who also appeared in that film) is typically hangdog as the record-company drone charged with getting Aldous to the Greek Theatre in LA for his big comeback gig. It's hardly an original premise from writer/director Nicolas Stoller (Yes Man), but he does set the stage for some brilliantly funny turns, and not only from the leads. Sean Combs is a literal scream as Hill's crabby boss and Rose Byrne (TV's Damages) is simply outrageous as Aldous's racy rapper ex-girlfriend, which all adds to an increasingly delirious atmosphere. The comedy is close to the knuckle at times, but Hill and Brand counter that with an easy chemistry, while those who normally find Brand too loud or abrasive may be surprised to see his softer side.
