A homeless boy takes part in a kite-flying contest, but neither he nor any of his friends can fly higher than a mysterious black kite that has seen off all competition for many years. Determined to win, he sneaks into a school and pretends to be a pupil so he can go on the roof and fly his kite from there - but to succeed, he has to hide the fact that he cannot read.
