The fates of four troubled souls are intertwined in this overly ambitious debut feature from writer/director Gerald McMorrow. The action shifts between contemporary London and the futuristic theocracy of Meanwhile City, as the lives of jilted Sam Riley, suicidal Eva Green, devout Bernard Hill and war veteran Ryan Phillippe collide in one moment of coincidence. Or was it preordained by higher powers? McMorrow's cryptic exploration of the vagaries of destiny, romance and faith is clearly indebted to Donnie Darko and Dark City, but isn't as satisfying. There are sensitive performances from the cast and the dingily ornate Blade Runner style is impressive, but the film simply piles on layer upon layer of fantasy and reality until all sense of a coherent narrative is lost. In the end, it's hard to emotionally engage or connect with the obscure pieces of an unsatisfying puzzle when they finally slot into place.
