Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen display suitable intensity as Flame and Citron, the most notorious members of the Holger Danske group that fought the Nazi occupation of Denmark during the Second World War. Set in Copenhagen in 1944, the story follows them as they stake out targets assigned by boss Winther (Peter Mygind) and dispatch them with ruthless efficiency. Each assassination takes its toll, and as these freedom fighters sense the turning tide of the war, they begin to exhibit the first dangerous signs of fallibility. Taking his cue from Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows, director Ole Christian Madsen generates a murky sense of paranoia and conspiracy as relationships become ever more complex. But, in relying on formulaic heroes and villains, he errs more towards Paul Verhoeven's Black Book than Andrzej Wajda's Ashes and Diamonds in exploring such complex themes as resistance, collaboration and expedient levels of violence against an enemy in wartime.
