This fantasy drama from director Phil Alden Robinson is a delightful blend of the blind-fate story and the more fanciful feel-good corn of Frank Capra. Kevin Costner, as an Iowan farmer, is the epitome of dignified determination as he accedes to a ghostly voice and turns the field on which his family depends for its livelihood into a baseball pitch. The underestimated Amy Madigan gives a good account of herself as his trusting wife, while Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley represent the spirit world with distinction.

Ray Kinsella is an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice telling him to turn his cornfield into a baseball diamond. He does, but the voice's directions don't stop -- even after the spirits of deceased ballplayers turn up to play.
