Jet Li stars here in the true-life tale of a legendary Chinese martial arts master who dishonours himself by inadvertently killing the right enemy for the wrong reason. When members of his family are slaughtered in retribution, Li goes into self-imposed exile. However the attentions of a village granny and her blind granddaughter restore him mentally and physically, and he returns to face a trio of foreign fighters put forward by European occupying powers to prevent a growing wave of Chinese nationalism. The plot, true or not, may reek of rehashed Jean-Claude Van Damme, but Ronny Yu directs with considerable visual style and the fight scenes are long and physical. No wonder, then, that the ageing star has declared this to be his last martial arts movie, making it a must-see for fans of both Jet Li and fight films in general.
