Overview:
Familiarity doesn't so much breed contempt as hilarity in this vibrant rite-of-passage tale from Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée. A pop culture-soaked journey through the first 20 years of a sexually confused Montreal boy's life, it takes well-trodden themes and delivers them in an irreverently fresh way. From his early 1960s childhood - when his Catholic mother (Danielle Proulx) believes he has healing powers - to his rebellious, Bowie-obsessed teens, Zac's existence is upbeat and idiosyncratic. The family conflicts range from darkly comic to painfully raw, as his disappointed father (Michel Côté) grapples with his son's increasingly alien behaviour. In a weaker film-maker's hands the surreal elements could have led the feature astray, but Vallée generally keeps a firm grip, aided by robust performances from Côté and Marc-André Grondin as the older Zac. It's only in the final third that the picture loses momentum, overstretching itself by tackling too many issues and not knowing when to quit.
