The war with France is over and an English ship called the Alcyone is sighted in the fog. The vessel is fastened to the Pandora and the passengers hold a ball - during which Talbot falls instantly in love with the captain's ward. Meanwhile, one of the Alcyone's officers is exchanged for Deverel, and quickly becomes a favourite with Capt Anderson, who adopts his plan in preference to Lt Summers', for saving the disintegrating ship.
