Clichés and stereotypes provide an uninspired foundation for this contrived tale of love across the social divide. Consequently, there are few surprises in the flimsy string of events that occur when rich law student Justin Bruening reluctantly mentors jobless single mum Jodi Lyn O'Keefe for a college project. But though their initially antagonistic characters soon realise they're kindred spirits, the leads share little chemistry together and just look awkward as the romantic tension increases. Exaggerated support - particularly from Eric Roberts as Bruening's hideously judgemental dad - and simplistic problem-solving compound the lack of realism, leaving it to the button-pushing injustices of the last act to finally add a touch of emotional depth and believability.
