Director Pitof's lame fantasy action adventure is a spin-off from the Batman franchise in name only. Selina Kyle, the part-kitty character memorably played by Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns, is here dropped in favour of a new creation. Halle Berry is unconvincing as scatty artist Patience Phillips, who's revived by a mystical cat after being murdered to become the eponymous, ultra-confident feline superheroine - a sometime jewel thief and righter of wrongs. Using her new-found skills, Phillips sets about uncovering a plot to flood the world with a toxic face cream, a scheme fronted by Sharon Stone, who's excellent as a model-gone-bad. What ought to be something for everyone turns into something for hardly anyone, as a romantic subplot involving sexy policeman Benjamin Bratt serves only to muddy the main story. Poor special effects (with weak echoes of better superhero outings such as Spider-Man) and an uneven central performance contribute to what was one of the flop blockbusters of 2004.

Before you can say "cat and mouse", handsome gumshoe Tom Lone is on her tail, fascinated by both of her personas.
