In director Tom Shadyac's comedy fantasy, Jim Carrey plays professionally wacky TV news reporter Bruce Nolan, who is passed over for promotion, vents his anger live on air, is sacked and curses God for doing a lousy job. Rising to the bait, the Almighty - a coolly majestic Morgan Freeman - gives the sceptical Bruce the chance to see if he can do any better. Bruce is none too bothered with world peace or any of that stuff; he does what you might expect a Carrey character to do when given divine powers - enlarge girlfriend Jennifer Aniston's boobs, perform a Red Sea-style parting of his tomato soup and pull the Moon out of its usual orbit to create a romantic moment. This wastes no time on deep theological questions; it's a return to Carrey the clown after public indifference to Carrey the actor. It has a neat premise and plenty of laughs, but it's not a film to stay long in the memory.

Bruce Nolan toils as a "human interest" television reporter in Buffalo, NY, but despite his high ratings and the love of his beautiful girlfriend, Bruce remains unfulfilled. At the end of the worst day in his life, he angrily ridicules God — and the Almighty responds, endowing Bruce with all of His divine powers.
