This anti-establishment comedy from the writers of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was filmed as a Dudley Moore vehicle, but the result pleased nobody. After previews, the movie was recalled, rewritten and partially reshot, incorporating a very expensive Eddie Murphy (hot from Beverly Hills Cop), billed awkwardly as "Strategic Guest Star". They weren't kidding! It still doesn't work, but it's fascinating to see how Murphy was filmed without interfacing with the rest of the existing cast and action. The anti-Russian material is tasteless and the comedy genuinely unfunny, but Kate Capshaw (Mrs Steven Spielberg) and Helen Shaver make it watchable to a degree.
