The musical that gives thousands of showbiz mums the chance to push their little darlings on the stage gets the Walt Disney treatment in this occasionally saccharine but enjoyably bumptious TV movie. Newcomer Alicia Morton plays little orphan Annie, who gradually thaws the heart of millionaire Daddy Warbucks (Victor Garber). As usual, though, it's the baddie who steals the show, and Kathy Bates is a memorable Miss Hannigan and received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. British actor Alan Cumming also impresses, while Chicago director Rob Marshall keeps it moving along zippily so that youngsters won't get bored.

Things seem pretty bad for a young girl living a "hard-knock life" in an orphanage. Fed up with the dastardly Miss Hannigan, Annie escapes the run-down orphanage determined to find her mom and dad. It's an adventure that takes her from the cold, mean streets of New York to the warm, comforting arms of bighearted billionaire Oliver Warbucks - with plenty of mischief and music in between.
