Overview:
Four years after Bride & Prejudice and some serious flirting with the Hollywood studios, Gurinder Chadha directs this very British coming-of-age yarn. Adapted from the first two books in Louise Rennison's Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series, the film stars Georgia Groome (London to Brighton) as the hormonal heroine. She's the stuffed olive at a fancy dress party where all the other girls are dolled up like Playboy bunnies, and it's this self-effacing humour that is so endearing. Of course, Georgia is far too clever for her own good and has much to learn about love and loyalty. The material may seem familiar, but Chadha has a light touch and never patronises her audience. Instead of gross-out gags, she exploits the dry humour that comes from Georgia's quiet exasperation with her embarrassing parents (played by Alan Davies and Karen Taylor), uncomfortable undies, and sloppy snogs. And Aaron Johnson is surprisingly soulful as the wannabe rock star heart-throb.
