James Mason is marvellous as submariner Captain Nemo in this beautifully designed (Oscars for art direction and special effects) and fabulously cast cinema retelling of Jules Verne's fantasy saga. Also on board the Nautilus is Kirk Douglas, who gives a bravura performance as harpoonist Ned Land, even using his own voice for the song A Whale of a Tale. Peter Lorre adds comic relief, while Paul Lukas and, especially, the underrated Robert J Wilke bring dignity to the proceedings. Director Richard Fleischer makes the most of the action sequences, notably a sensational battle with a giant squid. This is a treat for grown-ups and children alike.
