Overview:
Bank robbers use the 2006 World Cup in Germany as a cover for their heist in this low-budget thriller that feels like a belated addition to the raft of mockney British gangster movies inspired by Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. First-time writer/director Paris Leonti depicts the heist itself with rigour, the ingenious use of an airport check-in desk supposedly giving the gang a watertight alibi. But the robbery itself is fraught with problems, as greed, incompetence and sheer bad luck take their toll on ringleaders Alex (Geoff Bell) and Norman (Justin Salinger). Despite marshalling his ensemble cast with military precision, Leonti's workmanlike direction isn't helped by his limitations as a writer. A lack of character development turns the robbers into Identikit antiheroes and even the intended comic relief offered by Shaun Williamson's inept copper fails to deliver much in the way of amusement. Ultimately, this is a by-the-numbers heist movie with a payoff that fails to add up.
