| Guy Green was a leading British cameraman (Great Expectations, Oliver Twist) who, when he became a director, rather lost his way. In this Second World War action adventure, a desert patrol of British stalwarts (Richard Attenborough, John Gregson, Michael Craig) is sent behind enemy lines to blow up an Axis fuel dump before the battle of El Alamein. Green handles the macho elements with credibility, but the sentimentality that finally consigned him to directing weepies proves to be an irritating distraction. |

| During the evening of Halloween in 1975, 15-year-old Martha Moxley was beaten and stabbed to death outside her home in the affluent Connecticut town of Greenwich. Despite the shocking nature of the crime and several neighbourhood suspects, nobody was arrested or charged with Martha's murder. Over 20 years later, Mark Fuhrman, the cop whose reputation had been sullied during the OJ Simpson trial, reopened the case in his new role as a private investigator. Fuhrman found evidence pointing towards the Skakel brothers, Michael and Tommy, who are related to the Kennedys and who were interviewed by the police back in 1975. Considering the salacious material at his disposal, director Tom McLoughlin fails to generate much interest, let alone suspense, in this TV-movie reconstruction, which has the gimmicky approach of having the victim speak directly to camera. |

Director: Andrew Davis | Cert: 15 | Duration: 150 Mins | View Full Film Data
| Dial M for Murder was not one of Hitchcock's best movies, but this remake isn't even in the same league, despite the appeal of its two stars, Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow. Douglas takes the Ray Milland role here, plotting the demise of his beautiful, wealthy wife, Paltrow (played by Grace Kelly in the original), by getting her lover, Viggo Mortensen, to murder her for a $500,000 fee. So far so good, but things quickly come unglued. So, too, does Andrew Davis's direction, which sometimes fails to maintain the tension of the first hour, while the script seems more interested in making obvious points about life and art in the late 1990s. |

Director: Tim Story | Cert: PG | Subtitled | Widescreen | Duration: 120 Mins | View Full Film Data
| Sidestepping the fashionable angst of other comic-book adaptations, the confident Fantastic Four franchise delivers its second helping, with Tim Story resuming directing duties. This time, the blue-suited superhero "family" must prevent the end of the world as fabled airborne foe the Silver Surfer (voiced by Laurence Fishburne but given human shape by Doug Jones) wreaks havoc from his board. Welshman Ioan Gruffudd demonstrates an improved American accent as Mr Fantastic and Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon is back to provide some belated camp villainy as the team's nemesis, Dr Doom. There's an OK!-friendly wedding subplot, as Gruffudd marries Invisible Woman Jessica Alba, an impressive CGI set piece at the London Eye and more merry bickering. And for the Marvel trainspotters, the "Fantasticar" makes its screen debut. Trading in colourful spectacle, family-friendly fun and philosophically undemanding storylines, this is perfect popcorn for those who aren't looking for the teenage tantrums of Spider-Man or the darkness of Batman Begins. |

Director: Michael Apted | Cert: 12 | Subtitled | Widescreen | Duration: 155 Mins | View Full Film Data
| In a welcome return to the gritty glamour of such early outings as From Russia with Love, this 19th James Bond adventure effortlessly juggles a hard-hitting story with all the expected "super spy" embellishments and keeps everything in diamond-cut focus for maximum suspense and thrills. Plaudits should go to director Michael Apted for the stirring, not shaky, blend of casino, ski slopes and submarine components contained within a topical plot about the power struggle for global domination of pipelines from oil-rich Azerbaijan. Pierce Brosnan is clearly comfortable as 007, both in the dramatic sequences and during the spectacular stunts. (The opening speedboat chase along the River Thames gets things moving in turbo drive.) Matching him every step of the way are Sophie Marceau, the best Bond girl in ages, and Robert Carlyle, who is perfect as a vicious villain. Even Judi Dench's "M" gets out into the Middle East battlefield to show her gadget ingenuity. Though everything comes gift-wrapped in production glitz, there are many touching moments to temper the adrenaline-pumping action. Accompanied by a theme song from Garbage that sounds like Shirley Bassey revisited, the world's greatest secret agent entered the new millennium in fine blockbuster form. |

Director: Judd Apatow | Cert: 15 | Subtitled | Widescreen | Duration: 160 Mins | View Full Film Data
| Writer/director Judd Apatow follows up his hit "slacker" comedy The 40 Year Old Virgin with another refreshingly bold entry in a genre formerly mired in facile, post-Farrelly brothers gross-out. Pudgy, curly-haired Seth Rogen (a charismatic supporting player in Virgin) plays a harmless pothead who impregnates Katherine Heigl's media career girl during a drunken one-night stand. Prompted by the impending birth to give the relationship a go, our odd couple learns lessons about responsibility and life in general, but to hilarious rather than schmaltzy effect. Married-with-kids Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann (also Virgin alumni) are the foils for the younger pair, and Rogen's buddies, led by Jonah Hill, the geek chorus. Thanks to quality, near-the-knuckle repartee and believable chemistry between Rogen and Grey's Anatomy star Heigl (Apatow can certainly write for women), Knocked Up proves that hit comedy doesn't have to dumb down for its demographic. |

Director: Paddy Breathnach | Cert: 18 | Widescreen | Duration: 100 Mins | View Full Film Data
| The first horror movie from Irish producer/director Paddy Breathnach (Blow Dry, I Went Down) adds some smart twists to the teen slasher movie formula. Five American students holiday in rural Ireland where their friend Jake (Jack Huston, grandson of director John) assures them that the magic mushrooms are the most powerful going. Tara (Lindsey Haun) ingests a particularly potent fungus just as her friends start getting brutally slain - seemingly by shadowy urban legend the Black Brother. Can she separate stark reality from psychedelic fantasy in order to survive? Breathnach uses some Asian horror-influenced trickery, and it's all beautifully photographed in high acid style, which allows for a few unusual scares. The performances are accomplished - particularly Huston, and Sean McGinley and Don Wycherley as a pair of backwoodsmen - and this gives the film a credibility beyond its genre, although the final revelation rather undercuts what has gone before. |
Cast List: Tara : Lindsey Haun Jake : Jack Huston Troy : Max Kasch Lisa : Maya Hazen Holly : Alice Greczyn Ernie : Don Wycherley Bernie : Sean McGinley Bluto : Robert Hoffman |

Director: Joe Dante | Cert: PG | Duration: 140 Mins | View Full Film Data
| This attempt to update Fantastic Voyage doesn't measure up to director Joe Dante's best work, but it's still a notch above the usual Hollywood fodder. Dennis Quaid plays the hotshot military man who's miniaturised and mistakenly pumped into the body of lowly supermarket clerk Martin Short. The effects are excellent and Dante's sly humour shines through occasionally, but it lacks the anarchy the director is noted for and Short's hysterics eventually begin to grate. Meg Ryan pops up as the love interest and there are good supporting turns from Kevin McCarthy and Henry Gibson. Dante regular Dick Miller, once a fixture in Roger Corman's movies, has a cameo as a cab driver. |

| The result of a unique experiment, Faintheart was developed on the MySpace social networking website, with users chipping in ideas and jokes. It's therefore a little surprising that so many contributors could come up with so few laughs. The end result is a comedy about a loser called Richard (Eddie Marsan) who spends too much time dressing up as a Viking and re-enacting battles, and not enough time on his personal relationships. He may be dull, but Richard's still more of an attractive proposition than the flashy PE teacher (Paul Nicholls) who takes up with his wife (Jessica Hynes). The film plods along inoffensively and predictably, without inspiration or flair. Ewen Bremner does deliver a characteristically fine performance as Richard's Trekkie mate, but Anne Reid is wasted as his mother-in-law. Basically, the central premise - that nerds can be decent human beings - has been explored to better effect in countless more traditionally produced comedies. |
