"What happens when the rich get richer?"
- Genre: Documentary, Special Interest,
- Studio: Unspecified
- Subtitled | Duration: 110 Mins
Overview:
For anyone who has ever wondered how so many supposedly brilliant minds brought the global economy to the brink of meltdown in 2007, David Sington's documentary is essential viewing. It focuses on four hard-working individuals who placed their trust in financiers, to illustrate the film's central thesis - that the dramatic increase in income and asset inequality was a significant cause of the economic crisis. Sington occasionally risks being wise after the event, but accessibly places the crisis in its context, adeptly mixing expert analysis and animated sequences to explain such basics as supply and demand, competition and growth, and the ideological importance of property ownership. What will infuriate those now paying for the expensive mistakes of key players such as Alan Greenspan - whose stewardship of the US Federal Reserve comes in for rigorous scrutiny - is the fact that so many warning signs were missed during the dot-com and sub-prime booms facilitated by free-market deregulation.
