Overview:
Soon after the cultural restrictions imposed by the Taliban were lifted, the Afghan people revelled in the Pop Idol-style show called Afghan Star that renewed their interrupted love affair with music. However, as Havana Marking reveals in this partisan but fascinating documentary, Islamic traditionalists were not yet ready to relinquish their control over mass morality. The furore caused by contestants like hunky singer Rafi, classically trained Hameed, feminist Lima and glamorous Setara made them such targets of reactionary rage that even the government became concerned with the impact the programme was having on the nation. It may not be a particularly sophisticated way to examine such issues as democracy, religious intolerance, the status of women and the power of the media, but the movie demonstrates the real value of free expression and genuine talent - and exposes the cynical desire for instant wealth and cheap celebrity in the West.
