"The Truth Hurts"
- Director: Stephen Kay
- Genre: Drama, Action & Adventure, Mystery & Suspense,
- Studio: Morgan Creek Entertainment
- Duration: 130 Mins
Overview:
This ill-advised remake of the Mike Hodges/Michael Caine Tyneside-set classic sees a moody Sylvester Stallone taking over the vengeful Carter role and the action relocated to America. Several of the character names remain (although Rachael Leigh Cook certainly doesn't look like a Doreen) and some dialogue remains semi-intact. Yet, this has few similarities to the outstanding original, replacing gritty direction with flashy surface gloss, Caine's unremitting viciousness with Stallone's soft-centred bruiser, a small-time pornography ring with big-business internet entertainment and Roy Budd's haunting score with a noisy rock remix. Caine himself has an ineffectual cameo and is on the receiving end of Jack Carter's most celebrated line, delivered by Stallone as if he's reading a shopping list. Bearable, if instantly forgettable.
